Working Through Stalinism
Stalinism remains a “difficult past” in Russia. The efforts to come to grips with it are contested in academic, public debate, and culture. It’s been a decades long tug-of-war. Since 1953, coming to terms with Stalinism has oscillated between recognition and commemoration to denial and erasure. This live interview with Polly Jones (Oxford University) and Zuzanna Bogumil (Polish Academy of Sciences) will delve into the decades long effort at de-Stalinization during the (post-) Soviet period. What are the memories, narratives, and identities crafted through the disputed terrain of historical memory, heritage, commemoration, trauma, and reconciliation?
